Optional Meeting for the parents of children in Y5/6

Dear Parents

Your children are growing up and will be experiencing puberty as they develop. This is an important time for children and this theme forms part of our Science curriculum. We wish to communicate with parents our plans and the materials we shall be using with our Year 5/6 learners. As parents, you will always be the main advocate in helping your child through this process. We would like to invite you to a meeting to share the plans we are making for Year 5/6 students to learn about the physical and emotional changes related to puberty. It is important to us that you have the opportunity to discuss your thoughts with us before we begin anything with the children. This learning will be led by Mr. John. E, Ms. Emmi and Ms. Sanook. Below you can view our essential agreements for this learning which will be made clear to our learners at the start of the unit

During the meeting we intend to:

• Show the main resources we plan to use

• Hear your thoughts and comments 

• Share our plans on how we intend to organise the learning

It will be clear from the resources we are using that we will be focusing only on puberty and nothing beyond that. We will not teach details relating to human reproduction.

1. We will use the scientific words that we learn in a principled way.

2. We will not ask personal details of teachers, classmates or anyone else.

3. We respect those who don’t want to share and are not yet ready to talk about this subject.

4. We understand the fact that for some this is a sensitive issue, and so we will not make unhelpful comments.

Each week we will be having a scientist or inventor of the week. We are starting with Marie Curie who helped develop the use of X rays and was a traiblazer at a time when women were not encouraged to study or have a career of their own.

Mr Dave,from Canada, has joined UDIS. He will teach Y5/6 Art, Music and Drama in addition to supporting them in Library lessons.  We use Math's games to consolidate our learning and understanding of Maths. The boys are playing a game which uses fractions and decimals.

Our assembly this week was focused on safeguarding and staying safe.

This week's learning: การเรียนในสัปดาห์นี้

• Each child has chosen someone famous that they wish to research. They have been collecting online and text based sources of information and selected the format in which they will present their learning
• The children began to find out about Marie Curie and her influnce on society. They focused on her achievements and discussed how, as a woman, she had to battle for her education and how things have improved so that education is available to all regardless of gender.
• We have finished learning about the addition and subtraction of numbers with up to 3 decimal points
• We have begun testing the children on their multiplication skills.
